Winemaker's Notes:
Located high north east of Santa Maria Valley, Colson Canyon vineyard was planted in 1998 by retired doctor Reo Reiswig with clone 877 from Cote Rotie. The vineyard is planted on a knoll at 1500 feet above sea level in Colson Canyon. The soil consists of calcareus - limestone rocks and red chert and can retain great acidity even at high brix. For the 2006 vintage the yield was 2.8 tons per acre and the harvest began on October 21st and finished on October 24th, 2006 and 35% whole cluster were used in the fermentation that lasted for 14 days. Nothing was added to the must. The wine was aged on the gross lees without racking for 11 months and SO2 was only used once at bottling. The result is a dark, intense, structured and full-bodied Syrah, with blueberries and blackberries, smoke, violets and spice with an underlying minerality and a complex, long and heady finish.
